Signed by author on title-page and with his presentation inscription in Latin to the fiancee of his long-term next-door neighbour in North Oxford: ‘Elizabethae – / auctore felicitates ei / optimes volente / Robertus dedit / Colin Dexter’ with Robert Rivington’s inscription beneath: ‘et amplissimo corde / eandem donor amans / Robert / Christi Natale mcmxcii’. Loosely inserted Rivington’s printed permit issued by the Universtiy to walk in Wytham Woods (valid until June 1994) with map and list of rules for permit holders.
Both Colin Dexter and Robert Rivington taught classics early in their careers. Robert (who was shop manager at Waterfield’s 1977-1987) married Elizabeth Neilson in 1993 at the age of seventy.
